  • A 3D printer, or printed enclosure parts
  • 3 × AA batteries
  • 2.5 mm hex driver, Phillips #1 and Phillips #2 screwdriversThe optional UnderBaked Driver Kit includes all three bits.
  • Glue suited to your plastic

Assembly at a glance

  1. Connect the battery holder to the Power connector.
  2. Connect the speaker to the Speaker connector.
  3. Connect the antenna to the Antenna connector.
  4. Connect the switch to the Switch connector.
  5. Connect the LED indicator to either Aux connector.
  6. Install the assembly into your enclosure.
  7. Insert batteries and power on the radio.
  8. Adjust the tuning and volume controls.

The Tall Boy

Our featured project: a retro inspired tabletop radio you print and assemble around the kit.

It has a front speaker grill, tuning and volume knobs, a power switch, the LED indicator, internal antenna routing and a rear battery compartment. The build guide walks through every step with annotated photos.

Questions

Do I need to solder anything?

No. The board arrives fully assembled and every part plugs in with a JST connector.

Do I have to build the Tall Boy?

No. The Tall Boy is one design. The STEP model, technical drawing and connector reference are free to download so you can design your own.

What batteries does it use?

Three AA batteries, not included. The radio draws about 25 to 100 mA depending on tuning and volume.

What if reception is weak?

Check the antenna connection and routing, keep the antenna away from bundled wires, and try near a window. The troubleshooting page covers more.

Can I order kits in bulk?

Yes. If you sell prints and want kits in quantity, see bulk orders.
